The pretty village of Tinahely is just over an hour from Dublin. Blessed with some of Ireland’s most beautiful landscapes, hills and mountains, it is no wonder that it is also one of Ireland’s best walking destinations and as part of Discover Ireland’s Walkers Welcome programme, Tinahely is focused on making your walking holiday a pleasure.

Experiencing our variety of looped walks and the Wicklow Way trail is the perfect way to really discover Ireland. You are away from the crowds and busy places. Enjoy the solitude and appreciate the nature and the beauty of the landscape, while enjoying village life. Ireland is home to a wealth of natural habitats and many examples can be found in and around the Tinahely area. For less strenuous walks our Railway Walk, Railway walk extension and Tomnafinnoge Woods offer a comfortable distance with all the benefits of an off-road trail, convenient to the village.

The Wicklow Way was Ireland’s first waymarked trail, and due to its proximity to Dublin has remained one of the most popular walking routes in Ireland. Tinahely lies directly on this magnificent route, and provides the perfect base for exploring one of Ireland’s best-loved and most authentic paths.

Ordnance Survey Ireland (OSI) is the national mapping agency of the Republic of Ireland. The OSI website has a viewable map of Ireland, which is useful for giving a geographical oversight to many regions including South Wicklow and the entire Wicklow Way. You can select an area and zoom in to see detail – it is highly recommended. Click here to go straight to that section of the OSI website.

Railway Walk:

The Railway Walk at Tinahely was opened in September 2007. It runs along part of the original train track from Woodenbridge to Shillelagh, alongside the Derry River and through some farmland.

It is 2.3km in length. The walk has some picnic tables along the way and a clearly defined path suitable for wheelchairs and sturdy buggies.  Dogs must be kept on a leash.  The Railway Walk ends at Tomnafinnoge Woods. There is a car park at both ends of the Railway Walk.

Railway Walk Extension: The Railway walk was extended by 2km toward Aughrim from Tinahely Railway Carpark in recent years.

The Wicklow Way:

“The Wicklow Way” is Ireland’s first waymarked trail, and due to its proximity to Dublin has remained one of the most popular walking routes in Ireland.

Tinahely lies directly on this magnificent waymarked trail, and provides the perfect base for exploring one of Ireland’s best-loved and most authentic paths.

The Way winds through the Dublin and Wicklow Mountain range, the most extensive surface granite field in these islands, moulded over eons into a corrugation of east-west high rounded ridges and deep valleys.

Tinahely is the perfect starting point, and the Way can be followed all the way from here to Dublin, allowing a dramatic encounter of the wilds of Leinster sweeping into the genteel suburbs and city life.

It is a richly varied route, with dramatic scenery of mountains and lakes, where although there is a strong sense of remoteness and few habitations, one is never very far from a public road. Among the dramatically scenic places taken in by the route as it wends its way through the mountains is the ancient and beautiful monastic site of Glendalough, where many will want to linger.

The southern region of the Way, around Tinahely itself, boasts fantastic rural scenery and pleasant resting sites, and here the climbs are gentler as it wends its way along forestry roads through a landscape of conifer-covered foothills. Terrain consists of forestry tracks, quiet roads, boreens and mountain paths through open moorland. Some sections can be wet and muddy. The total ascent over the entire route is about 2820 m.

Tomnafinnoge Woods:

Just outside the town of Tinahely, Tomnafinnoge Wood is a special area of conservation as one of the largest remaining oak woods in Ireland.

This ancient woodland will bring you back in time. Giant oak trees dominate but you will encounter plenty more trees and plants on these walks.

Tomnafinnoge Woods offers three different walks of varying distance. The most popular is the River Walk of 2km (4km both ways). Shorter walks are the Oak Walk, 3.2km, and the Hazel walk, only 1.3km. Both of these walks are looped.

The woods are suitable for all walkers and provide a wonderful amenity for families. The forest itself, and the Derry River which meanders through it, teem with wildlife, kingfishers, frogs, brown trout, deer and even the elusive woodpecker have all been heard and seen in the forest.

There is ample car parking and the three trails are clearly signposted. The car park also serves this end of the Railway Walk, a linear walk that takes you 2.3km back towards Tinahely.
